Solomon (“Sol”) Bender was born in Belfast into a family of teachers, who moved to Liverpool in 1921. At age 16 he won a scholarship in classics to study medicine in Liverpool. In January 1946, after five and a half years in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR), he became the first disciple of T N A Jeffcoate (later knighted when president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists).
