Pamela Mary Spencer (née Bacon) (“Pam”) entered medical school just after the end of the second world war. A place at the Royal Free having been put in doubt at the last minute owing to damage from a V2 rocket, she transferred to University College. She went on to qualify in 1950 and completed junior doctor jobs in surgical specialties in London and Cambridge. Pam gained her FRCS in 1957 and specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology.
