GMC imposes conditions on surgeon’s registration after two babies die

A doctor whose failings in obstetric emergencies may have contributed to the death of two babies has been found guilty of deficient professional performance by the General Medical Council.

Ashok Mohanty also left gauze swabs in two women’s bodies within a single week. Last week a GMC fitness to practise panel imposed 15 conditions on his registration for a period of 18 months. These include working with a postgraduate dean to formulate a personal development plan to tackle deficiencies in his management of emergencies and working only in the NHS, where his work will be supervised by a consultant.
