Srivastava, R. N. – Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, 1989
An analysis is provided of the belief that theories developed about literacy within different academic disciplines and development campaigns have been built around contradictory assumptions. The conclusion is made that research is needed in order to make literacy instruction more functional in adult literacy programs. (109 references) (GLR)

MacClaren, Richard I. – Rassegna Italiana di Linguistica Applicata, 1989

Baldauf, Richard B., Jr. – Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, 1994
It is argued that "unplanned" language policy and planning are an important but underexamined aspect of the field of language planning. Planners must consider the problems raised by "unplanned" aspects and scholars must document their effects on language planning. (Contains 15 references.) (LB)

Shirai, Yasuhiro – Issues in Applied Linguistics, 1990
The relationship between prototype meanings and frequency of use is investigated with a view to establishing a foundation for the problem of "prototype acquisition." One polysemous basic verb, "put," is used in this study of native speaker discourse, and implications for both prototype theory and the acquisition of polysemy are…

Locker, Rachel – Issues in Applied Linguistics, 1990
The accuracy of transliterated messages produced by sign language interpreters was studied. Causes of interpreter errors fell into three main categories: misperception of the source message, lack of recognition of source forms, and failure to identify a target language equivalent. (12 references) (Author/LB)
Descriptors: Applied Linguistics, Deaf Interpreting, Error Analysis (Language), Higher Education

Gilbert, Rob – Linguistics and Education, 1992
Models of ethnographic research in education treat context in an arbitrary way, and the theory of language used is inadequate. However, a discourse analysis framework can be useful in improving qualitative research in education by relating accounts of specific sites and events to their social contexts. (27 references) (MSE)
Descriptors: Applied Linguistics, Context Clues, Discourse Analysis, Educational Research
Bardovi-Harlig, Kathleen – IRAL, 1992
In an examination of the complex interaction of the linguistic devices employed in the expression of temporality, eight adult English-as-a-Second-Language learners participated in a study of time adverbials and verbal morphology. (19 references) (LB)

Cronk, Brian C.; Schweigert, Wendy A. – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1992
Previous research has been inconsistent in supporting any one model of idiom comprehension. This study found evidence of the effect of familiarity on reading times for sentences containing idioms, as well as new evidence that literalness affects reading times and that both familiarity and literalness exert interactive effects. (22 references)…

Biber, Douglas; And Others – Applied Linguistics, 1994
This paper illustrates the use of corpus-based analytical techniques to address a range of issues in applied linguistics.
