Yu, F. – PRIMUS, 2023
A productive understanding of rate of change concept is essential for constructing a robust understanding of derivatives. There is substantial evidence in the research that students enter and leave their Calculus courses with naive understandings of rate of change. Implementing a short unit on "what is rate of change" can address these…

Jakopovic, Paula; Johnson, Kelly Gomez – Innovative Higher Education, 2023
Creating sustained, transformative change within and across organizations is challenging, particularly when those undertaking change act as individuals. COMmunities of Practice (CoPs) are organically created collaborations among like-minded participants, working toward a common set of goals (Lave & Wenger, 1991; Wenger-Trayner &…

Ava Greenwood; Michael Jennings – Australian Mathematics Education Journal, 2023
This paper reports on university students' responses to an inverse proportion question. The authors conclude that inverse proportion is a difficult concept that requires constant reinforcement, using approaches to teaching that facilitate deeper conceptual understanding.

Ashraf F. Demian – ProQuest LLC, 2023
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a global lockdown and compelled institutions to shift to emergency remote teaching. This transition and the lack of knowledge of using technology affected teaching practices, including assessment. Confronted with new contexts for assessment and threats to validity caused by ineffective proctoring, many instructors had…

Pamela Burdman; Melodie Baker – Campaign for College Opportunity, 2023
This brief focuses on the important role that math requirements contribute to inequity in access to college, in particular the value placed on calculus, even though it is not an essential course for students who are seeking non-STEM degrees. The boost earned by students who are fortunate enough to have access to calculus, a benefit unequally…

Liliana Aurora Tabares Sánchez; Luis Enrique Moreno Armella; Isaías Miranda Viramontes – North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2023
The development of the mathematical concept of the infinite, through the reflections that arise from personal notions and perceptions and the analysis of some ideas of Galileo and Cantor, invites us to investigate the relationship between intuition and formalization for the understanding of the said concept. This paper aims to observe and describe…

DeFeo, Dayna Jean; Mammo, Behailu – Journal of Teacher Education and Educators, 2023
Though teacher education programs must document candidates' teaching dispositions, there is a gap in the literature around what faculty may learn by observing students in contexts outside of the k-12 classroom. This case study explores what faculty may learn about teaching dispositions by observing tutors. For our study, three mathematics…

Pulvermacher, Alice; Kallio, Sandra – Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, 2022
In this article, the authors discuss how a system change framework was developed to change the way a school system worked for students. Decades of reports documented inequitable placement into and completion of remedial mathematics in the University of Wisconsin System (UW System). Incoming "undecided" students often enrolled in college…

Cakir, Ozlem – Journal of Learning and Teaching in Digital Age, 2022
Since Personalized Instruction increases the motivation, interest, performance and attitude of the student, it is aimed to develop an instructional management system that can be adapted to the individual, taking into account the prior knowledge level of the person who provides the personalization of all instructional materials. The project is…

Lindsay, Euan; Evans, Tanya – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2022
Lecture capture (LC), the process of recording face-to-face lectures for future viewing, has become a common technology in Western universities in the twenty-first century, yet research on its effectiveness has lagged behind its implementation. Despite the rapid, widespread implementation, research regarding the impact LC has on pedagogy and…

Daniel Lee Reinholz – Intercultural Education, 2025
Promoting equitable classrooms is a goal of postsecondary mathematics education, but there is still limited research on how faculty learn to teach more equitably. Despite the variety of techniques developed in primary and secondary education, there has been less use in higher education. This manuscript focuses on the 'assigning competence'…

G. R. Fulford – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2024
Mathematical modelling has great potential to motivate students towards studying mathematics. This article discusses several different approaches to integrating research work with a second-year undergraduate, mathematical modelling subject. I found sourcing papers from the areas of epidemiology and ecology to be a fruitful source area,…

Jenny Cox; Scott Kaschner; Mary Krohn – PRIMUS, 2024
The number of undergraduates placing into developmental or "remedial" coursework continues to increase. This rise is concerning because developmental or "remedial" coursework creates barriers for many students. This mixed method study examines a holistic approach to placement. After one-on-one interviews with mathematics…

Dae S. Hong – School Science and Mathematics, 2024
This study explores calculus students' opportunities to learn the concepts of integral by examining one mathematician's videotaped lessons and the textbook. Results show that both lessons and the textbook introduce important cognitive resources briefly and focus on other units of knowledge. Implications to these results are also discussed.

David P. Bunde; John F. Dooley – PRIMUS, 2024
We present a detailed description of a Cryptography and Computer Security course that has been offered at Knox College for the last 15 years. While the course is roughly divided into two sections, Cryptology and Computer Security, our emphasis here is on the Cryptology section. The course puts the cryptologic material into its historical context…
