Soderquist, David R. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1993
Auditory filter widths for six groups of subjects, adults and children, were tested with fixed signal level (psychophysical tuning curve procedure) and fixed masker (notched noise procedure). Found that auditory filter widths from ages six to adult were not significantly different, and auditory deficits that appear as a function of age likely…

Holden, Marjorie H.; MacGinitie, Walter H. – 1969
An evaluation of kindergarten children's awareness of lexical units and of the relationship of this variable to prediction of beginning reading is presented. Eighty-four kindergarten children--47 boys and 37 girls--served as the subjects and were tested individually for their ability to identify word boundaries spoken in sentences. The study…

Wookcock, James E.; Alferick, Larry A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1982
A discrete trials, operant tracking and a descending series procedure for the determination of hearing levels with three profoundly retarded young adults previously diagnosed as untestable proved quite workable and may provide for improved hearing testing with "difficult to test" individuals. Turner, Christopher W.; Henn, Carol C. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1989
The study employed measures of frequency resolution obtained from individual subjects (two normal and three with sensorineural hearing loss) to predict each subject's vowel recognition performance. A relation between impairments of frequency resolution and vowel recognition was found. The described model may be useful in predicting vowel…

Wilson, Richard H.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
Materials from the Northwestern University Auditory Test Number 6, spoken by a female speaker, were passed through a low-frequency notch filter, reducing the amplitude range within the spectrum. Data obtained from 12 normal-hearing listeners in filtered and unfiltered conditions demonstrated that alterations to words spoken by the same speaker…

Hall, Joseph W.; Grose, John H. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1993
This study of 14 children (ages 5-9) with a history of otitis media with effusion found that subjects had significantly reduced masking-level differences (MLD) compared to controls. Results suggest that the reduction in MLD may be related to abnormal brainstem processing. (Author/JDD)

Hall, Joseph W., III; Grose, John H. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
Three experiments with young children and adults were performed to examine the development of frequency selectivity and to attempt to separate peripheral versus central contributions to frequency selectivity. Results suggested that the shallow notched-noise, fixed-masker-level functions of four-year-old children are probably a result of poor…

Dahr, Sumit; Long, Glenis R.; Culpepper, N. Brandt – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 1998
The ILO92 was used to determine the level of Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) at 2f1-f2 for 16 combinations of primary levels in the range of 40 to 80 dB SPL from 40 unimpaired adult ears. An overall increase of DPOAE amplitude with increase in primary level was observed. (Author/CR)

Share, David L.; Jorm, Anthony F.; Maclean, Rod; Matthews, Russell – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2002
Examines the hypothesis that early auditory temporal processing deficits cause later specific reading disability by impairing phonological processing. Suggests that auditory temporal deficits in dyslexics may be associated with dysphasic-type symptoms observed by Tallal and her colleagues in specific language-impaired populations, but do not cause…
