Exner, Robert; And Others – 1973
The sixteen chapters of this book provide the core material for the Elements of Mathematics Program, a secondary sequence developed for highly motivated students with strong verbal abilities. The sequence is based on a functional-relational approach to mathematics teaching, and emphasizes teaching by analysis of real-life situations. This text is…

Olds, Edwin G., Comp; And Others – 1942
This yearbook is a reference source of direct applications of mathematics for use in grades 7-12. Topics are listed alphabetically in each of four sections: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. An explanation is given as to the plan of the book, making the location of desired material easier, and an index is included. In many cases the…

New York Inst. of Tech., Old Westbury. – 1970
The second review segment of the Self-Paced Physics Course is presented in this volume and arranged to match study segments 19 through 40. The segment is divided into five subsegments, each of which is composed of a set of problems and solutions. A study guide is provided for each subsegment. The problem set is designed in a back-referencing…

Skavaril, Russell V.; And Others – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1976
This paper describes an application of Computer Assisted Instruction named 'genpbs' consisting of five modules of preliminary instruction and 19 modules of problems for students in an introductory genetics course. Each problem module consists of an average of 14 problems arranged in increasing level of difficulty. The program also contains a…

Lucas, John F. – MATYC Journal, 1978
The author organizes some of the information known about the problem of dividing space by five planes in general position along with its extensions, and consolidates it to highlight some interesting patterns in both methods of solving analogous problems and their results. (MN)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Geometry, Higher Education, Induction

Brookshear, J. Glenn – American Mathematical Monthly, 1978
An example of a mathematical modeling problem involving student enrollment and attrition is given along with a discussion of methods and conclusions. (MN)
Descriptors: Activity Units, College Mathematics, Higher Education, Instructional Materials

Field, David A. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1978
An example is given of a mathematical modeling problem involving the number of people that get on and off an elevator and the expected number of stops it makes. (MN)

Pollak, Henry O. – School Science and Mathematics, 1978
Analyzed are textbook word problems that are typically used as applications of mathematics and shows some of the difficulties in making these problems realistic. A discussion and examples of sources of genuine mathematical applications in real life follows. (MN)

Garrison, Lloyd – Balance Sheet, 1977
Working simulation sets is as close as most high school accounting students come to actual job experience, according to the author. Suggestions are offered for motivating students, teaching the sets, establishing time goals, using a variety of sets with some student choice, and systematic student evaluation. (MF)

Beentjes, J. W. J.; Jonker, V. H. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1987
Second and third graders from six Dutch elementary schools (N = 168) solved two sets of almost identical addition and subtraction sums at a two-week interval. Inconsistency in strategies, which characterized half the subjects, was related to unfamiliar sums and resulted in misinterpreted errors. (TJH)

Sloyer, Clifford W.; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1985
The mathematical content involved in self-teaching enrichment models for students in grades 8-12, the pedagogy employed in a summer institute for such students, and the results obtained are presented. (MNS)
