Ivany, J. W. George – Science Education, 1971
Suggests that an evaluation of the questions asked in inquiry training episodes may not reflect the logical progression of steps designed to formulate explanations or hypotheses, but also depend on students' disposition towards approval, tendency to minimize risk, and motivation by external factors. Studies of inquiry behavior should include…

Betz, M. Austin; Levin, Joel R. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
Logically consistent hypothesis-testing for factorial analysis of variance designs is proposed in the context of a hierarchical model. It is shown that all of the hypotheses associated with the traditional factorial model are conceptually independent and occupy the lowest levels of the hierarchy. (Author/JKS)

Werts, C. E.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
A linear structural model for comparing quasi-Markov models across populations is demonstrated. A confirmatory factor analysis formulation of the simplex model is also developed for between group comparisons. A variety of possible applications of this approach are suggested. (Author)

Seligman, Clive; Hutton, R. Bruce – Journal of Social Issues, 1981
Explores the problems involved in conducting program evaluation in the field of energy conservation. Highlights similarities between evaluation research and basic research. Examines stages of evaluation research within the context of energy conservation programs and argues that experimental evaluations are desirable and feasible. (Author/MK)

Keselman, H. J.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
This paper demonstrates that multiple comparison tests using a pooled error term are dependent on the circularity assumption and shows how to compute tests which are insensitive (robust) to this assumption. (Author/GK)

Shapiro, Jonathan – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 1982
In an effort to maintain internal validity while maximizing the generalizability of evaluation results, the theory-testing methodology that links program activities to outcomes (program theory) is proposed. To evaluate a program by explicating and testing the program theory is to perform evaluation as theory testing. (PN)

Smith, Steven S. – Teaching Political Science, 1981
Describes a college course which will help students develop an appreciation of the systematic study of politics. Students learn to scientifically explore political behavior and events and develop knowledge of elementary research design principles and problems in preparation for a subsequent elective course in political science research methods.…

Krone, Kathleen P.; Loomis, Maxine E. – Journal of Nursing Administration, 1982
Provides an example for nursing administrators wishing to promote clinical nursing research in their own facilities using staff clinicians and outside researchers. By sharing the structure and processes of their project, the authors offer their experiences as a model for others interested in developing collaborative research. (Author/CT)

Boik, Robert J. – Psychometrika, 1981
The validity conditions for univariate repeated measures designs are described. Attention is focused on the sphericity (equality of variance) requirement. It is recommended that separate rather than pooled error term procedures be routinely used to test a priori hypotheses. (Author/JKS)

Muller, Keith E. – Psychometrika, 1981
Redundancy analysis is an attempt to provide nonsymmetric measures of the dependence of one set of variables on another set. This paper attempts to clarify the nature of redundancy analysis and its relationships to canonical correlation and multivariate multiple linear regression. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Data Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis, Multivariate Analysis

Butcher, James N.; Tellegen, Auke – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
Discusses methodological problems involving use of MMPI by reviewing past literature. MMPI is so easily used that it is sometimes misapplied or data obtained from it are incorrectly analyzed by researchers unfamiliar with its limitations or peculiarities. Suggestions for improving research design are made. (Author/BEF)
