Kurtz, Ray – Math Teacher, 1969
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Placement, Student Placement

Wollman, Warren – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1983
Reasons for college students making reversal errors translating a sentence to an equation were explored in six studies. The principal sources were haste, failure to check, failure to base the equation on the sentence meaning, and use of nonalgebraic symbols. Students could successfully check when prompted. (MNS)

Swartz, Rose Ann; Swartz, Fred – Business Education Forum, 1981
An investigation into the effectiveness of pretesting using a departmental business mathematics test and the ACT mathematics test was conducted at Ferris State College. Both students and faculty seemed to benefit from the decision to use the ACT mathematics score in sectioning the business mathematics course. (CT)
Descriptors: Ability Grouping, College Mathematics, Postsecondary Education, Pretesting
Friedman, Susan L. – MATYC Journal, 1979
A teacher's personal account of teaching remedial mathematics in college is given. (MK)
Descriptors: Algebra, College Mathematics, Higher Education, Mathematics Teachers

Le Roux, A. A. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1979
Two definitions of numeracy are considered. A process for developing numeracy is outlined. (MK)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Mathematical Applications, Mathematics, Mathematics Education
Quadling, Douglas – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
A geometric interpretation is given to the proof of the theorem that states that the symmetry group of a square is not a normal subgroup of the symmetry group of the regular tetrahedron. (MP)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Geometric Concepts, Higher Education, Instruction

Boas, R. P. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1979
Two problems related to the mean-value theorem lead into a problem requiring the use of the universal chord theorem. This latter theorem is discussed and a proof given. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculus, College Mathematics, Graphs, Higher Education
Teles, Morris – Community College Frontiers, 1976
A mathematics instructor at Muskegon Community College describes his successful use of rear-view slide projection, audio tapes, and videotapes in teaching calculus. (DC)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Community Colleges, Multimedia Instruction, Two Year Colleges

Maor, Eli – Mathematics Teacher, 1977
An identity for sin x/x is proved. Rate of convergence, a geometric interpretation, and an application from physics are discussed. (DT)
Descriptors: Calculus, College Mathematics, Higher Education, Instruction

Jones, F. Burton – American Mathematical Monthly, 1977
The Moore methods, in which college mathematics students prove theorems for themselves, is described. Difficulties and drawbacks to this method, appropriate areas of mathematics in which the Moore method can be used, and techniques in using the method are discussed. (DT)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Higher Education, Instruction, Mathematics Education

Onwuegbuzie, Anthony J.; Leech, Nancy L. – Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 2003
Asserts that the current assessment reform movement in statistics encourages instructors to think more broadly about cognitive measures that assess student learning and to incorporate authentic assessment, performance assessment, and portfolio assessment. Discusses areas to consider for assessment, problems with typical assessments, and…
Descriptors: Alternative Assessment, College Mathematics, Evaluation Methods, Higher Education

Propp, James G. – Mathematics Magazine, 1988
Answered is the question, "If we label 12 spheres and roll them over the surface of an inner sphere at will, what permutations are achievable?" Illustrations are included. (MNS)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Geometric Concepts, Higher Education, Mathematics

Dorwart, Harold L. – Mathematics Magazine, 1988
Point and circle configurations are not well known, so Clifford's chain of theorems and Miquel's theorem, whose diagrams exhibit such configurations, are discussed. A new theorem similar to Miquel's is then presented. (MNS)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Geometric Concepts, Higher Education, Mathematics

Ross, Clay C., Jr. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1991
This note presents a simple theorem which explains why the method of undetermined coefficients works in finding a particular solution, both for differential equations and difference equations. (Author)
Descriptors: Calculus, College Mathematics, Differential Equations, Higher Education

Reid, J. D. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1991
Given a multiplicative group of nonzero elements with order n, the explicit relationship between the number of cyclic subgroups of order d, which divides n, is used in the proof concerning the cyclic nature of that given multiplicative group. (JJK)
