Sparks, Glenn G. – Central States Speech Journal, 1986
Assesses the validity of a 20-item scale that purportedly measures long term memory records--in this case, frightening mass media. Evidence for validity emerged in that subjects' scale scores were related to negative emotion, negative cognitions, and skin conductance during film clips of scary movies. (NKA)

Meadowcroft, Jeanne M.; McDonald, Daniel G. – Journalism Quarterly, 1986
Analyzes research in the area of children and the media and concludes that there is no support for the hypothesis that research questions relating to the subject are cyclical and follow a predictable pattern with the introduction of each new medium into the social system. (FL)

Elliot, Stephen N.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1986
The predictive validity of the Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS) in identifying gifted children among various sociocultural groups was examined. Tracey, Terence J.; Sedlacek, William E. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1987
In 1979 and 1980, college freshmen (N=1766) completed the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ). The validity of the NCQ in predicting graduation status after five and six years was assessed for Black and White students. Results indicated that the noncognitive dimensions measured by the NCQ were significantly related to graduation but the traditional…

Stanley, Julian C. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1987
Meta-analysis of research on a topic may exclude reports that do not present their results in a statistical form amendable to summarizing procedures used. This article illustrates how researchers can consider this aspect in computing statistics from their data. An illustration of how that can sometimes be done is presented. (Author/JAZ)

Vikan, Arne – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 1985
Prevalence estimates of psychiatric disorders in 10-year-old rural Norwegian children were based on responses to symptom checklists distributed to parents and teachers. Parents' index showed highest validity and was used as a basis for prevalence estimates. Properties of the index were shown to be sample specific. (Author/AS)

The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test Revised (PPVT-R) and the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS) (reading, mathematics, and language subtests) were administered to 61 elementary school students in semi-rural Louisiana. Moderate positive correlations were found between PPVT-R scores and all CTBS subtests except mathematics computation. (GDC)

Hanna, Gerald S.; Sonnenschein, Joan L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1985
The relative predictive validity of girls' and boys' success in algebra is examined. Eighth-grade students completed the Orleans-Hanna Algebra Prognosis Test. These prognosis test scores were correlated with grades that students subsequently earned in first-year algebra. Algebra grades of girls proved to be the more predictable. (Author/DWH)

Lalonde, R. N.; Gardner, R. C. – Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, 1985
Examines the predictive validity of the "Attitude/Motivation Test Battery" (Gardner, et al, 1979), specifically the three composite measures derived from the battery--motivation, integrativeness, and attitudes toward the learning situation.
