Hannah, H. W. – Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, 1975
Examines admissions requirement problems regarding the legality of using criteria related to professional performance but which are less capable of evaluation than academic standing; of considering race or sex as factors; of either more or less stringent requirements for non-residents of the state. (JT)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Higher Education, Legal Problems, Professional Education

Goldman, Roy D.; Slaughter, Robert E. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1976
Many errors in the selection of college students are inversely related to the validity of the predictors employed. The generally weak validity with which grade point average (GPA) has been predicted may be a criterion problem rather than a predictor problem. GPA prediction is inferior to single-class grade prediction. (BJG)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, College Entrance Examinations, College Students, Grade Point Average
Reed, Bernard – Improving College and University Teaching, 1976
An experimental study showed that the present 5-factor formula (high school rank, personality rating, verbal and quantitative scores, and interviews) for admitting teacher education candidates to New Jersey State Colleges remains more effective than a method based largely on the recommendation of the secondary school. (JT)

Kahng, Anthong I. – Bridge, An Asian American Perspective, 1978
Presented in this article is an overview of the Allan Bakke case. Implications are made for the effects the court's decision will have on the future of affirmative action and on the potential civil rights achievements of minority groups, particularly Asian Americans. (EB)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Affirmative Action, Civil Rights, College Admission
Marshall, Thurgood – Freedomways, 1978
While the author applauds the judgment of the Supreme Court that a university may consider race in its admissions process, he considers it ironic that, after several hundred years of class-based discrimination against Blacks, the Court is unwilling to hold that a class-based remedy for that discrimination is permissible. (Author/KR)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Affirmative Action, Black History, Blacks
Liacouras, Peter J. – Cross Reference: A Journal of Public Policy and Multicultural Education, 1978
Neither racial minorities nor women should be made the scapegoats for the numbers and admissions crunch. Larger issues of admissions should be reexamined. The assumption that only numerical indices measure "quality" or "merit" or potential for performance in a profession should be questioned. (Author/EB)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Blacks, College Admission, Females

Fort, Edward – Journal of Negro Education, 1978
Given the essence of the Bakke decision, it is now incumbant upon committed faculties in the nation's universities to continue to implement affirmative action policies which do, in fact, articulate race as a legitimate criterion for admission. (Author/EB)
Descriptors: Access to Education, Admission Criteria, Affirmative Action, Blacks

Hirschberg, Nancy; Itkin, Stuart – American Psychologist, 1978
Correlations between standard ability variables such as first year grades and early graduate school success criteria are supported by data from a study of graduate psychology students at the University of Illinois. Certain peer ratings emerged as important predictors of later success. Sex differences were less than anticipated. (Author/EB)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Admission Criteria, College Admission, Graduate Students

Westerfield, Louis – Southern University Law Review, 1977
Bakke vs The Regents of the University of California is examined in historical perspective and in light of recent developments in the area of reverse discrimination. An attempt is made to analyze the nature of the California Supreme Court's holding, demonstrate the errors in the logic, and expose the potentially catastrophic results should the…

Howey, Kenneth; And Others – Journal of Teacher Education, 1978
Most teacher education programs are preparing teachers for conventional self-contained elementary and secondary classrooms; however, programs preparing teachers for more specialized roles and support functions are increasing in number and size. (JD)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Core Curriculum, Enrollment Trends, National Surveys
U.S. News & World Report, 1978
Hidden favoritism for wealthy students applying for graduate study is scandalizing some campuses. Now, colleges are seeking ways to halt the preferential treatment. (Editor)
Descriptors: Administrator Attitudes, Admission Criteria, Advantaged, College Administration
Richardson, Frances – Journal of the New York State School Boards Association, Inc., 1978
The center's program provides individualized professional training to gifted and talented high school students on a half day basis. Students who pass the stringent entrance requirements may select courses in art, dance, drama, music and play-writing, and all participate in interarts workshops. Student reaction has been very positive. (EB)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Aesthetic Education, Cooperative Education, Creative Activities
Time, 1978
Ruling 5 to 4, the Supreme Court finds a middle ground in the sensitive Bakke case. It gives something to everybody, outlawing strict racial quotas but permitting race to be considered in college admissions policies. (Editor)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Affirmative Action, Civil Rights, Higher Education

Haglund, Alma – Nursing Outlook, 1978
The author presents an economic model for selective admissions to postsecondary nursing programs. Primary determinants of the admissions model are employment needs, availability of educational resources, and personal resources (ability and learning potential). As there are more applicants than resources, selective admission practices are…

Rosenzweig, Robert M. – AGB Reports, 1978
The first need after the Bakke case is for an atmosphere in which the right questions can be asked and answers sought. Advocates and opponents of preferential admissions need to be willing to discuss the root issues with candor and courage. (Author/LBH)
