Cutting, James E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1975
Phonological fusion occurs when the phonemes of two different speech stimuli are combined into a new percept that is longer and linguistically more complex than either of the two inputs. The present article is an investigation of the conditions necessary and sufficient for fusion to occur. (Editor/RK)

Cutting, James E.; Day, Ruth S. – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
Research is reported which examined the effect of various factors on the frequency of phonological responses. Phonemic order and location of clusters within a syllable affected fusion. Initial stop-liquid clusters fused readily; final liquid-stop clusters rarely fused. Some subjects fused on most or all trials; others fused less frequently.…

Wiseman, Douglas E. – 1969
Definitions and specific breakdowns of four (auditory reception, visual sequential memory, verbal expression, and auditory closure) of the 12 language areas of the new Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) are presented. Auditory reception is defined as the ability to understand the meaning of materials or stimuli that are heard and…

Lester, Barry M. – 1973
Two experiments are reported in which cardiac habituation and dishabituation to pure tone stimuli were studied in well and malnourished Guatemalan infants. In both studies the magnitude of the orienting response was found to be attenuated or completely absent in infants suffering from nutritional insult. The findings were taken as evidence of a…

Uselding, Douglas K.; Molfese, Dennis L. – 1974
To measure the symmetry of adult categorical phoneme perception, 10 adult male undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology class were the subjects for this study as part of their course requirements. The stimuli used in this study were prepared at Haskins Laboratories by means of a parallel resonance synthesizer and computer. The…

McGurk, Harry; MacDonald, John – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1978
Outlines two competing hypotheses concerning the nature of inter-modal sensory development. Research on auditory-visual coordination in young human infants is reviewed. It is concluded that the data support the notion of ontogenetic development being a process of intergration between sensory systems that are initially relatively independent.…
