Value orientation and different aspects of self-esteem were assessed with male delinquents, marginal delinquents, and nondelinquents. No value orientation or overall self-esteem differences were found, supporting Kaplan's theory that delinquents use psychological defenses to enhance self-esteem and retain endorsement of social values. Used the 1972 through 1980 National Opinion Research Center's General Social Survey to examine differences between Jewish and non-Jewish family patterns. General indicators showed little difference, although Jews were less likely to have divorced or separated, had smaller families, and placed a higher value on children's autonomy. (JAC)
