Career entrenchment is immobility resulting from substantial economic and psychological investment in a career that makes change difficult. A survey of 476 workers in various occupational groups found that those higher in entrenchment had higher organizational commitment, lower withdrawal intentions, and longer tenure. (Author/JOW)

At 2 sites information was collected from 168 workers, and their 3-letter Holland work environment codes were crossed with 3 measures of person-environment congruence. Comparison of volunteers at the Olympic Games in Lillehammer in 1994 (n=200) and Sydney in 2000 (n=200) showed they were strongly motivated by national pride, social contact, and friendship. A 1992 survey of 1,042 Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA) members and a 2000 survey of 689 members and 340 nonmembers had similar results.
