Enhancing Geographic and Digital Literacy with a Student-Generated Course Portfolio in Google Earth
Guertin, Laura; Stubbs, Christopher; Millet, Christopher; Lee, Tsan-Kuang; Bodek, Matthew
Journal of College Science Teaching, v42 n2 p32-37 Nov 2012
Google Earth can serve as a platform for students to construct a course ePortfolio. By having students construct their own placemarks in a customized Google Earth file, students document their learning in a geospatial context, learn an innovative use of Google Earth, and have the opportunity for creativity and flexibility with disseminating their new content knowledge. In addition to associating learning with location, students can record and edit audio and video files to enhance the context of and deeper connection to geography. By instructing students on multimedia resources available in the public domain, students can add their original files along with existing, copyright-free geolocated photos. Students react positively to the Google Earth ePortfolio. Students self-report learning and retaining more knowledge through the construction of customized Google Earth files. Students also report spending more time with the existing Google Earth layers and incorporating this information as a supplement. After creating a Google Earth ePortfolio, students are expanding the use of Google Earth to additional projects in other disciplines. Overall, the innovative course design of having students document their learning in a geospatial context with Google Earth can increase student exposure to geographic and digital literacy.
