Motivation, Engagement, and Student Voice
Toshalis, Eric; Nakkula, Michael J.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v78 n1 p29-35 Sep 2012
Figuring out what motivates and engages individual students is essential. Indeed, it is the prerequisite for implementing student-centered approaches to learning. However, today's teachers--confronting large class sizes, fast-paced academic calendars, and standardized assessments--face particular pressures to lump all students together and "teach to the middle." To help educators engage and motivate each individual in a large, diverse group of teenagers, the authors review research on achievement, motivation, school engagement, and student voice and highlight what works. They conclude that empowering youth to express their opinions and influence their educational experience are powerful tools.
