The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers resources to help a school or school district improve the environmental health and energy performance of its facilities, and in many cases, apply the savings generated through improved energy efficiency toward facility improvements, for the betterment of students, faculty, and staff. As an appendix to the voluntary guidelines for schools, EPA has developed a model K-12 school environmental health program as a resource that states can customize and share with schools and school districts to help them establish or enhance their individual school environmental health programs. The model is applicable for schools that are beginning to develop or are strengthening an existing school environmental health program, and includes the key steps for implementing a program, as well as practical actions that schools can take to address a wide range of environmental issues. This article discusses how EPA's model school environmental health program, School Siting Guidelines and ENERGY STAR[R] Program can help a school or school district develop a customized, holistic, and sustainable environmental health program.
