Teaching Young Scientists about Their Bodies
Ashbrook, Peggy
Science and Children, v50 n1 p22-23 Sep 2012
Early childhood educators contribute to the good health of their students every day. By telling students, "Wash your hands" and "Eat your healthy food first," and providing them time to develop gross motor skills through active play outdoors, teachers hope that students will take the advice with them on the way to a healthy and active lifestyle. Another way that teachers contribute to their students' health is by helping them build explanations of how the human body's parts and systems function, part of the National Science Education Content Standard C: Life sciences, characteristics of organisms. Children learn about their senses by using them and documenting the experiences. When students use their senses to learn about the skeletal system, they are learning about themselves in more ways than one. A description of a classroom activity that teaches students to create models that demonstrate how bones support the body of a vertebrate animal is included. (Contains 3 online resources.)
