Research & Teaching in Developmental Education, v29 n1 p15-32 Fall 2012
The purpose of higher education is to prepare students for the workforce. In order to prepare students for the workforce, many life lessons must be learned specifically respect for others' work. One of the invaluable lessons that a student can learn regarding respect for others' work is to appreciate originality and avoid of plagiarism. To be prepared for the workforce, each student must be able to distinguish themselves as original and creative. Students must be able to stand out from the other students with whom they find themselves in competition for jobs. For developmental education students, who may face challenges in developing original thinking, this ability to distinguish oneself is often even more difficult to achieve. Developmental education students are those who do not meet college readiness requirements for reading, writing, and/or mathematics. At a university in the southern United States, a group of administrators and teachers assembled to see how issues of plagiarism are being taught in developmental classes. In this study, the researchers explored the relationship between increased ethical discussions and the usage of plagiarism detection software to see if the occurrences of plagiarism do in fact decrease for developmental education students once these measures are taken.
