Patient-Centered Care: Depends on the Point of View
Lorig, Kate
Health Education & Behavior, v39 n5 p523-525 Oct 2012
Patient-centered care is now front-and-center in health care reform. The federal government has established the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to study this new phenomenon and health care delivery systems such as patient-centered medical homes. Where is the health education profession in all of this? Despite what it has to offer, to date, it appears to be on the periphery of this discussion. As the author started to think about what this means for health education, her immediate response was that health educators are--and have been--way ahead of the game and should be included. After all this is what they do. However, being a scientist as well as a patient, the author had to look at the evidence, and what she found is not that promising. In this article, the author begins with some definitions. Then, she examines what health education can offer. She concludes that the time for patient-centered care has come and health educators have the knowledge and skills to move this agenda forward. However, there are some challenges to overcome. The author proposes a short list of potential solutions to these challenges.
