Rosch, David M.; Lawrie, Joshua D.
Journal of College and University Student Housing, v37 n2 p54-71 2011
The purpose of this study was to conduct exploratory research to examine what undergraduate students learn by participating in and holding a leadership role in residence hall governments. Alumni were interviewed to determine the degree of learning that lasts through their entrance into a professional work environment. Six recent alumni, ranging in graduation years from 2002 to 2005, who were involved in various hall government organizations as undergraduate students at the same institution were interviewed. Themes included the significant degree of learning that occurred in the areas of administrative responsibilities, dealing with interpersonal differences, problem solving, and the development and maturing of personal values. Implications discussed include the institutional provision of challenging experiences and competent professional advising.
