Journal of Gay & Lesbian Issues in Education, v1 n2 p61-63 2003
This article features Safe Haven Project, a comprehensive school-based education and victim services program that focuses on anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) bias in diverse neighborhoods of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). In its effort to help schools articulate and practice a vision of a more tolerant and less discriminatory society, the Safe Haven Project provides educational services and advocates for policy changes at the district and state levels and delivers four distinct services at the program's three high schools: (1) peer support group activities; (2) bias prevention education classroom presentations; (3) sensitivity orientations for teachers, staff, and parents/guardians; and (4) victim services for students.
