The Clubbers' Guide: "Be Inspired, Inspire Others"
Carter, Liz
School Science Review, v94 n346 p27-32 Sep 2012
"Be inspired, inspire others" is this author's school motto and also something she aims to achieve by running the Science Club at The Warwick School in Redhill, Surrey, UK, an 11-16 specialist technology comprehensive. The Science Club is part of an extensive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programme that has developed over time through the involvement of a large number of staff. It extends from outreach activities with the feeder primary schools and a summer school for rising year 7 students, through events for their own students including a renewable energy day, and on to activities for parents and other adults in the community, with technology challenge evenings, bat walks, annual lectures etc. The Science Club is open to all students but mainly attracts a certain type of year 7 member, the "boisterous boys". They are not the most academic students but enjoy the practical side of science, especially anything that involves using Bunsen burners or some kind of fire. This article presents the clubbers' guide to being inspired and inspiring others. (Contains 11 figures and 9 online resources.)
