Distributed Leadership: Promoting Better Decision Making
Wood, Jo Nell; Lea, Dennis
School Business Affairs, v78 n6 p12-13 Jun 2012
The leadership role of the school business official has changed during the past two centuries. Initially, a lay board oversaw the area of school business. That responsibility then moved to selectmen of the town and later to a committee of men. In 1910, the role of school business official was formalized with the establishment of the National Association of School Accounting Officers. Today, the role of ensuring that school districts' financial stability falls to school business officials. Because of the size and complexity of those districts, school business officials are involved in district operations beyond financial resource management, helping lead the organization in such areas as human resource management, facility management, property acquisition and management, information management, transportation, and risk management. This list of responsibilities highlights the extent to which the school business official position has shifted in today's education setting and the breadth of responsibilities now resting on the shoulders of the SBO.
