This article features Wade Hampton High School in Greenville County, South Carolina. Named for Wade Hampton III--a Civil War hero, a US senator, and a governor--Wade Hampton High School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010 in a beautiful, modern, state-of-the-art facility built on the original school site in 2007. Although most of the 1,600 students come from homes within the school's neighborhood attendance zone, Wade Hampton has carved a niche as the school of choice for many out-of-boundary students in Greenville County who are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis as "special permission students." Although parents of those students must provide transportation for their children, the school has seen a dramatic increase in the number of students wishing to attend the school--recently demonstrated by the hundreds of parents who camped out overnight in the rain to gain access to the school for their children. At Wade Hampton, the annual analysis of student achievement data has become a vital part of the instructional planning process. School goals are set annually on the basis of data trends and current achievements. Teachers have access to test scores and other achievement data for their individual students, both past and present, through a data portal. All stakeholders, including students, are involved with the student achievement data.
