Principal Leadership, v12 n7 p44-47 Mar 2012
Images can be powerful tools for change, but without compelling images of the future of education, everyone will be forced to use the images of the past. The problem is that schools can't be built on old images: they must reflect current best practices that infuse technology, relationships, background knowledge, culturally responsive texts, and cooperation and collaboration with partners around the globe. School leaders must promote images of successful schools that highlight successes found in test scores but also go well beyond that narrow definition of success imposed on them by state and federal officials. Over the past 30 years, TV and film have presented images of what teachers and students do. Combine those images with the antiquated images of the classrooms that many individuals learned in, and there is the recipe for misunderstanding what schools are really like. Intentionally communicating accurate stories to families and communities helps educators overturn the mental models that were shaped by the fictional schools in television and movies. School leaders must grab hold of the messages and stories of their schools so that they can provide hope, optimism, and clarity about the road forward for the education system as a whole.
