Implementing Check in/Check out for Students with Intellectual Disability in Self-Contained Classrooms
Boden, Lauren J.; Ennis, Robin P.; Jolivette, Kristine
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v45 n1 p32-39 Sep-Oct 2012
Check in/check out (CICO) is a secondary-tier intervention implemented within the framework of schoolwide positive behavior interventions and supports (SWPBIS) that uses school-based contingencies to encourage positive behavior. CICO is a five-step cycle which uses daily progress report cards (DPR) to monitor progress toward schoolwide or individual behavioral goals. Students with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities often exhibit behavioral difficulties that require individualized interventions. However, with appropriate modifications, students with severe disabilities may benefit from less intensive secondary interventions such as CICO. This article describes the five-step cycle of CICO along with modifications for implementation with students who have moderate and severe intellectual disabilities. (Contains 1 table and 2 figures.)
