The Lipscomb University Adult Degree Program exemplifies how a centralized governance system can benefit nontraditional college students and promote cross-departmental interactions. The two-person staff of the adult program at Lipscomb University envisions a number of potential benefits of having a much larger staff. However, such a programmatic organization also presents challenges to efficiency, because the adult program office depends on the time and expertise of other campus professionals to aid in fully serving the adult student. Moreover, budget constraints and current staffing patterns oblige them to maintain a very centralized structure, and they rely greatly on colleagues in other offices across campus. In the meantime, the author opines that the ADP is best suited to find a reasonable balance as a mostly centralized program. The key then is finding how best to partner with other staff and faculty while maximizing those services that can be provided within the walls of the adult office.
