Projects with Passion
Anthony, Colleen; Leader, Wendy S.
Understanding Our Gifted, v22 n2 p21-23 Win 2010
Even though creativity is often included as one criterion for identification of gifted students, its development is not standard practice in many schools. What can teachers do to address creativity in the classroom? How can a teacher add one more thing to an already overcrowded curriculum? Rather than adding, creativity should be embedded into the existing curriculum. It is important to note the difference between "teaching creatively" and "teaching creativity." Many teachers work with great personal creativity to plan lessons and deliver instruction, only to insist that students produce narrow assignments and respond to questions that have only one correct answer. To encourage the development of innovation, the teacher must have an operational definition of creativity and its accompanying skills and strategies. The core attributes of fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration can be developed within any curriculum content. "Projects with Passion" is an approach to independent study for both gifted and mixed ability classrooms. It integrates creativity into the curriculum and lets students know that their personal interests are valued. The authors suggest that by pursuing passions with students, creativity will become a natural part of all curriculum areas, and young people will come to feel that their personal interests are of value in their lives. This article offers helpful tips for teachers who are planning to utilize "Projects with Passion" in their classrooms.
