Research for Primary Students: Not an Impossible Dream
Sheets, Cindy
Understanding Our Gifted, v21 n3 p3-5 Spr 2009
Gifted students thirst for knowing and understanding. They are quick to learn new information, have great recall, are capable of investigating topics in depth, and pose meaningful questions. These youngsters go beyond the basic facts to seek answers, draw conclusions, and evaluate information. Young gifted students, however, may lack the skills necessary for inquiry based investigations. In the elementary grades, children are often asked to construct short reports in response to factual questions. While this is a needed basic skill, it should be only a beginning. In this article, the author discusses some proven methods and resources for teaching young students how to do in-depth research.
