Forging New Partnerships: Collaboration between University Professors and Classroom Teachers to Improve History Teaching, 1983-2011

In this article, the author discusses the collaboration between university professors and classroom teachers to improve history teaching over the past twenty-five years, and explores the nature of these partnerships from the perspectives of the university participants. She highlights the salient themes that emerged from the interviews. In a follow-up study, she intends to explore these collaborations from the point of view of the classroom teachers who participated, and compare the two perspectives. This article takes an inside look at the nature of collaborative partnerships through the eyes of the participants. It presents a summary of the author's findings based on seven themes that emerged during her interviews with professional historians. A description of history collaboration projects is provided in the appendix and includes the centers and collaborative projects discussed in this article. (Contains 2 figures and 28 notes.)
