Multilevel modeling (MLM) gives researchers the ability to make inferences about organizations where nesting factors will bias results and the assumption of independence is not tenable. This article provides an overview of the variety of data sources that lend themselves to conducting institutional research (IR). It not only serves as a repository of data ready for use (although some have restrictions), it gives a blueprint on how secondary data sets are designed and maintained. The latter part of the article gives an overview of the software that runs multilevel models. There are many more software programs than those listed in this article; the authors describe some of the more widely used ones. (Contains 2 tables.)
