When the author had been teaching middle school and high school math for six years, she had just completed her master's degree and was itching to find other opportunities for professional growth. That's when she came across a flyer about certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (www.nbpts.org). National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential available to any current teacher who has a bachelor's degree, a valid teaching license, and at least three years of classroom experience. The flyer invited her to "join the ranks of the nation's most accomplished teachers who help students develop the necessary skills to thrive in school, in the workplace, and in the 21st century global economy." The author shares how the National Board process helped her to become a better teacher. For those who want to be better teachers, the author suggests that pursuing National Board Certification is the next step on their career path.
