From Queen Mab to Big Boy: A Century of "New" Literacies
Kist, William
English Journal, v101 n1 p93-100 Sep 2011
The debate over the place of new literacies extends throughout the history of English teaching and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). English teachers have had some help dealing with the onslaught of new media. From the start, NCTE has provided support for English teachers interested in branching out beyond a print-dominated paradigm--for those teachers who want to help their students access human expression in whatever form it takes. As Mary T. Christel and Sandy Hayes have pointed out, NCTE has been providing ideas, suggestions, and space for discussing the use of such media as newspapers, magazines, and phonograph records in the English classroom since the 1910s.
