What Changes Can We Expect? Future Trends Impacting Early Childhood Education
Neugebauer, Roger; Donohue, Chip; Schweinhart, Larry; Milic, Sasa; Martin, Jody
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n200 p84-86 Jul-Aug 2011
The author invited some of his friends to give their views regarding key trends that will impact the early childhood world in the coming years. Chip Donohue, Director of Distance Learning, Erikson Institute, Chicago, Illinois, observed that the rapid pace of technology development and deployment has already changed, and will continue to change, the way in which early care and education is delivered--from online technology tools for teacher education and professional development to program management tools for communication, financial management, record keeping and assessment, to technology tools, digital devices, and digital media that are used in classrooms with young children. Larry Schweinhart, President, HighScope Educational Research Foundation, mentioned that governments are becoming more interested in supporting early childhood programs that contribute to children's development. Sasa Milic, Associate Professor, University of Montenegro, said that because the world's young children are the human capital of the future, early education is becoming recognized worldwide as an essential element in any long-term, sustainable development strategy.
