Moving beyond Green: Sustainable Development toward Healthy Environments, Social Justice, and Strong Economies
Edwards, Keith E.
New Directions for Student Services, n137 p19-28 Spr 2012
Sustainability initiatives in higher education in general and student affairs specifically must recognize the impact of one's present decisions on environmental health, social justice, and economic strength. Efforts must push beyond "green" ideas to identify solutions that move toward a future that is environmentally capable, more just and equitable, and economically viable for all. In this chapter, the author begins with environmental, social, and economic definitions of sustainability, and explores the roots of sustainable development and potential in higher education. Next, he discusses how educators must move beyond just an environmental focus to effectively understand and address the challenges of a global community. Then, he explores the three different aspects of sustainability, using a campus example to illustrate the different ways social justice, environmental concerns, and economic stability are interconnected. Finally, he shares examples of how colleges and universities might apply a synergistic approach to sustainability to push themselves to find better solutions.
