Thinking beyond the Playing Field: Leading Change in Your Community
Groppel, Jack L.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v82 n6 p35-40 Aug 2011
Today our country is facing an epidemic of inactivity and obesity, which has resulted in increased serious health complications, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease among others. Inactivity and obesity among youths are also associated with subpar academic performance. Prompt action is required if we are to have any real hope in curbing, and perchance even preventing, the predictable and catastrophic consequences of this epidemic. This article explores lessons learned in the field of sport science to demonstrate how it is possible to harness the power of story method as an effective strategy for behavior change. We can rewrite our story and develop an effective action plan for meaningful change. In other words, we can--one day at a time--change the story of our nation from one of inactivity and obesity to one of physical fitness, regular activity throughout one's day, academic achievement, and good health!
