Developing a Philosophy of Supervision: One Step toward Self-Authorship
McNair, Delores E.
New Directions for Student Services, n136 p27-34 Win 2011
Self-authorship, as described by Baxter Magolda (2008), is about trusting ourselves (our internal voice), rather than relying on external voices to guide our lives. Young professionals attempt to navigate new experiences based on prior knowledge and begin to distinguish what others tell them from what they believe and value on their own. The path toward self-authorship can be filled with challenges and may require some guidance: "Moving toward self-authorship requires support for cultivating one's internal voice, particularly until the fragile internal voice becomes strong enough to hold its own against external pressures" (Baxter Magolda, 2009, p. 250). This seems to present a dilemma: how can new professionals move from a reliance on external voices when they may need to rely on someone to support that effort? The author's goal is to provide one framework that can help identify values and beliefs regarding supervision that can help create a path toward self-authorship.
