Knowledge Is Power: Teaching Children about Type II Diabetes
Feild-Berner, Natalie; Balgopal, Meena
Science and Children, v49 n3 p32-36 Nov 2011
World Diabetes Day (November 14) offers a wonderful opportunity to educate elementary children about the power they have to control their health. First lady Michelle Obama has urged Americans to educate themselves about childhood obesity, which is often associated with the onset of type II diabetes (Rabin 2010). The authors developed activities to teach elementary children about insulin function in conjunction with lessons on portion control. These diabetes education "workshops" were entitled "Knowledge Is Power" in an effort to convey to students that they can play a role in preventing the onset of type II diabetes. The authors used National Science Education Standards and the National Health Education Standards to design lessons that were grade appropriate. They wrapped up the "Knowledge is Power" workshop by reminding students that healthful eating, limited sugar intake, and plenty of physical activity are all important to stay healthy and prevent the onset of type II diabetes. (Contains 5 figures and 6 online resources.)
