Torrey, Michelle Kerber; Leginus, Mary Anne; Cecere, Susan
Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics, v31 n2 p115-119 May 2011
In this commentary the authors share their experiences on the design and implementation of community-centered early intervention programs in Prince George's County, MD. Their aim in designing community-centered programs was to provide infants and toddlers opportunities for learning, language, and motor development in natural environments with typical peers. Programs include library groups, motor and sensory play groups, music groups, parent/family/caregiver workshops, and outings to public places for families to play, have fun, and move and explore in new environments. Programs are provided in child care centers and family child cares; libraries; parks; community and recreation centers; community colleges; commercial enterprises such as The Little Gym, Jump Bunch, and a farm; a faith-based institution; a neighborhood sports and learning complex; and the Judy Center.
