Shifting Perspectives and Practice to the Positive Function
Jones, Nate
Communique, v40 n3 p16-17 Nov 2011
School psychologists are often in the position of seeing a situation, a system, or a common strategy for working with students that might be approached from a different perspective. Knowing this themselves is rarely good enough, though; they work in teams and as consultants to teachers and parents who generally work most closely with the students. As a result, a major challenge is to shift people's understanding and bring about support for the different, more effective approach in a manner that is at once authoritative and collaborative. This shift requires effective communication and professional advocacy skills that are grounded in a genuine expertise on the topic, an understanding of the current perspective of the people involved, and deep respect for the importance of their role in promoting success for students. Expanding staff thinking and approach to functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) presents one such opportunity. Through a well-done traditional FBA and behavior support plan (BSP), students can be taught positive behaviors. Promoting and enhancing good behaviors by adjusting the environment and improving behavioral teaching is a process for which school psychologists are uniquely trained. This work requires an understanding of consultation strategies, academic instruction, behavioral techniques, and mental health counseling. By bringing together all of these perspectives, school psychologists can help educational teams develop BSPs that lead to genuine behavioral growth for students.
