Teaching Intercultural Awareness with Star Wars: A New Hope
Erlandson, Karen Thea
Communication Teacher, v26 n1 p17-21 2012
A fundamental concept in Intercultural Communication is developing an understanding of different cultural patterns. Understanding different value dimensions such as collectivism, power distance, and high versus low context cultures are important steps to gaining a facility in communicating cross-culturally. This article presents an activity that assists students in exploring the value dimensions of an imaginary culture and calls upon them to use their knowledge to predict communication behaviors and outcomes. This activity is not graded and consists of several parts: an instructional discussion, creation of an imaginary culture in groups, class discussion of each group's culture, application of culture to a case study, and a debriefing. Through this activity, students will understand the relationship between cultural patterns and communication outcomes. Students will role play cultures with varied cultural patterns in both group and class settings. (Contains 1 table.)
