Strengthening Reading in the Art Classroom
Klein, Lisa Lundgren
Arts & Activities, v150 n1 p35, 43-44 Sep 2011
Art teachers are always looking for new ways to bring reading opportunities into the classroom--without just reading chapters in a textbook. This assignment helps broaden the knowledge of students in areas that teachers may not have time to explore during art classes. It also gives students something to work on if they have finished their project. Additionally, students of all reading levels can increase their skills in a fun, informative way, while learning more about art. This assignment involves creating reading packets with short, yet probing, questions. Students will read an article and answer three questions. A packet of answer sheets (anywhere from eight to 15) is given to each student at the beginning of a grading period. The completed packet becomes one major grade. Teachers gather reading materials, and create the packets, which contain information on art techniques and mediums, artist interviews, careers in art, etc. This assignment works best at the high-school level, as classes are usually longer and students are more able to work independently; however a middle-school teacher could locate shorter articles and require fewer readings. This article suggests where to find interesting articles and presents grading guidelines. Through this lesson, middle- and high-school students will interpret, evaluate, and justify artistic decisions in their works; write an interpretation of a specific article relating to art; and identify the purposes of art.
