Developing Cultural Understanding: The Culture Triangle Paradigm in FCS
Sullivan, Deborah A.; Schmidt-Rinehart, Barbara C.; Morris, Nancy A.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v103 n4 p45-47 2011
Academic institutions as well as professional organizations are faced with providing their constituents with the knowledge and tools that will enable them to interact with people of other cultures--to be global citizens in both their personal and professional lives. The foreign language profession developed a paradigm that has been effectively applied in family and consumer sciences. The study of culture is focused on 3 Ps: products, practices, and perspectives. Examples are given of the application of the paradigm in two university FCS classes: Clothing & Culture and Food & Culture. The paradigm's effectiveness in instruction and students' research projects is discussed. (Contains 1 figure.)
