Tribute to Julie Taymor's Lion King Costumes
Carter, Mary C.; Beaty, Ben
Arts & Activities, v149 n4 p24-25, 36 May 2011
Julie Taymor's costumes and masks for the stage version of "The Lion King" were stunning in the way they combined the dual images of human and animal forms. Taymor visually incorporated the human form of a dancer into the simplified form of the animal character so both are equally visible. This visible duality of human form and animal characteristics became the focus of the art project: to design a wearable masked costume of an animal/human. In this art project, middle-school students answer questions about the influence of other cultures on the life of Julie Taymor and her Lion King costumes, create Taymor-inspired animal costume designs that express the quality of duality, and create a costume and mask based on their watercolor sketches of animals.
