Zeman, Laura Dreuth; Swanke, Jayme; Doktor, Judy
School Social Work Journal, v36 n1 p61-78 Sep 2011
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have become the second most common childhood developmental disorder. The parents of these children are hungry for information regarding ASD and often seek support and advice from the internet and virtual social networks. This qualitative study analyzed blogs of twenty-four mothers raising children with ASD. This study relied on qualitative content analysis. Two stages of coding were applied to statements related to school interventions. First, deductive thematic coding classified the statements as risks and successes. Second, themes were matched with outcome measurements that may be useful in determining the effectiveness of accommodations at local levels. Risks were identified related to testing, structured classroom activities, playgrounds, transportation, and whole school activities. Successes include altering settings and assignments, aides, and involving parents. Suggested outcomes include achievement scores, behavior incidents, attendance, parental involvement, and participant feedback. (Contains 1 table.)
