There is ample reason to be discouraged about the prevalence of sexual prejudice. As Herek (2000) notes, the majority of adult respondents in the United States report that homosexual behavior is wrong or "unnatural." The author readily acknowledges, then, that it is overly optimistic to believe that sexual prejudice is a thing of the past or that one can confidently predict a future where gay civil rights are granted and protected, rather than being denied and threatened, by legislators. As she reflects on her research and teaching about this topic, the author cannot help but be hopeful. When she teaches her courses on prejudice and discrimination and on diversity, she asks her students to imagine a world where things are different. In this commentary, the author also wants to focus on the signs indicating that this different world "is" possible. A quick glance at one's national awareness of gay and lesbian issues provides one source of optimism.
