Presence and Absence: The Impact of Collaborative Blogging on Devised Ensemble Work
Bable, Wendy; Waxman, Sara; Bellomo, Samantha
Teaching Artist Journal, v9 n4 p226-235 2011
This article puts forth the reflections and questions of three artists at People's Light and Theatre (Resident Teaching Artist Sara Waxman, Resident Director Samantha Bellomo, and Producer for Arts Discovery Programs, Wendy Bable) in their ongoing dialogue on the intersection of media, young artists, and theatre-making in the Teen Summerstage program. Young artists in Teen Summerstage create, design, build, and perform an original piece inspired by one of the plays in the upcoming season at People's Light. In 2009, the authors established a blog to support the program, titled "Days End," which had a significant and changing impact on both the ensemble and the created work in both 2009 and 2010. Their intent is to provide the reader with the sense of immediacy present in a representative moment of the work itself, as students generate material for a devised theatre performance using a collaborative blog as a site of dialogue and creation. This is followed by a contextualization of how that moment unfolds within macrocosm of the program, how their experience in 2009 differed significantly from their experience with the same program in 2010, and their projections for 2011. Finally, they offer their observations of how this lived experience of theatre-making through collaborative blogging echoes the cognitive processes involved in perceiving and understanding live theatre.
