Expanded learning time and opportunities (ELTO) has emerged in recent years as a viable whole-school and whole-child strategy that both honors academic goals and supports broader educational and developmental ones. More schools serving low-income students are extending their schedules, using time as an important lever to expand learning opportunities. Although each expanded learning time school (ELT) customizes its schedule to fit the needs of its students, many schools are turning to community-based organizations that offer expanded learning opportunities (ELOs) as equal partners in a re-envisioned school day. This chapter examines crosscutting themes, core challenges, and opportunities facing ELTO partnerships, and closes with concrete macrolevel steps the education field should consider within the expanded learning discourse.
