Given their value to the student experience, institutional identity, alumni loyalty, and economic welfare, historic preservation efforts must unite with institutional sustainability efforts and other high priorities to develop an approach for mutual success. Further, it is important to recognize the limits in the current milieu of economic transition and to look for ways to better use existing resources, including the campus and its facilities, as a didactic setting for future endeavors. It is increasingly important for those with historic campuses to share their experiences--both successful and not--with fostering learning environments enriched (and not impeded) by historic buildings and landscapes. After all, it is these special campus settings that create opportunities for encounter and enrichment for students, faculty, staff, and the public that far exceed those developed through any online collegiate experience.
